  Sun 26 Jun    1pm–3.30pm (bus pick-up 12pm/return 4.30pm Central Station)    4 Pines Brookvale Brewery, 4G 9-13 Winbourne Rd, Brookvale 2100
 $45 members, $60 non-members

With their favourite two things in mind – beer and fun – our very talented mates up on the Northern Beaches have come up with a plan so crazy, it just might work. The 4 Pines team have assembled one-of-a-kind, home-made pilot brewery, especially for this event. The plan is then for our guests to work with said contraption to help create a very special beer.

Guests will be split up into three groups: one to select the malts, one to choose the hops, and the third to pick the yeast strain. Each team will work independently, and contribute to an ale that will be named ‘4 Pines Russian Roulette’. The brewing process will be overseen by the masterful 4 Pines team.

While 4 Pines may or may not be entering the Roulette into any beer awards, all guests/collaborators are invited to return to brewery once it’s bottled to collect their very own piece of brewing history. If it’s a cracker, you may even see it featured as an actual 4 Pines Keller Door brew down the track. If it fails miserably… well, at least we can all have a good laugh about it.

As well as a tour of the brewery, all guests will receive 4x half-pints from the 4 Pines range (during the above festivities), and a giant helping of 4 Pines’ legendary pizza pie. Transport from Central Station is included in the ticket price, courtesy of Dave’s Brewery Tours.

Beers
To accompany the brewing process and tour, guests will each receive two half-pints of 4 Pines Pale Ale, and two half-pints from the 4 Pines Keller Door range or from the award-winning 4 Pines core range. The bar is built into an old Dodge showcasing 21 of 4 Pines taps, including the core range crowd pleasers, and rotating taps to showcase the large variety of small batch Keller Door range. Attendees can select from the beer range available on the day.

Pizza pie
Unique to 4 Pines, the 4 Pines Pale Ale Pizza Pies have been created by their head chef by using the aforementioned award-winning Pale Ale in the dough recipe instead of water, shaping the pizza base into a pie for ease of eating and filling it with delicious, fresh and in-house made toppings.

Transport
Tickets include transport to and from Brookvale courtesy of Dave’s Brewery Tours. Bus leaves at 12pm at Central Station, all ticket holders will be emailed with details of the meeting point.

Bonus beer
All guests are invited to come back to the brewery to collect a free 4 Pines Keller Door Russian Roulette, once it’s brewed, conditioned and fit for human consumption!

This month, the Clubhouse welcomes the multi-award winning local brewery Modus Operandi

generic-beer-paddle

Wed 16 Mar    6.30pm–8.30pm    Uncle Hops, The Bank Hotel, 324 King St, Newtown 2042
 $15pp exclusive to BLCo members

We’re opening up the Clubhouse at Uncle Hops to our seventh guest brewer. This month, the team from Modus Operandi will be flying in, all the way from the Northern Beaches.

Only three months after opening the brewery in July 2014, Modus Operandi won several trophies at the Craft Beer Industry Association Awards, including awards for Australia’s Best Amber/Dark Ale, and Best IPA. Since then, they have been recognised as the Best New Australian Brewery in 2015, and their Former Tenant Red IPA (see below) was placed no. 9 at the Hottest 100 Craft Beers in Australia.

On the night, the Modus team will showcase their beers, while Bottled Lightning Co’s beer guru Liam Pereira will lead a Q&A, before exploring the remainder of the MO range. Guests will receive a tasting paddle of MO beers to accompany the brewer presentation. Tasting notes will be provided, and the Clubhouse bar will be open following scheduled proceedings.

The Beers

Former Tenant Red IPA
7.8% ABV
Bursting with aromas of Passionfruit and Mango due to a heavy hand on the Mosaic and Galaxy dry hops, this Ruby Red IPA has a complex blend of citrusy hops and savory caramel malt flavor followed by a slightly sweet finish.

Sonic Prayer IPA
 6.0% ABV
Amongst the countless machinations of the India Pale Ale, Sonic Prayer is an enigma; an interstellar rendition of a timeless classic. Brewed as a tip-of-the-hat to our brewer’s favourite band, Earthless, Sonic Prayer is a psychedelic conglomeration of the holiest of ingredients.

Marching Powder Stout
TBA
This one’s still in the tanks – tasting notes available on the night.

Drupey One Brown Ale
4.5% ABV
The Drupey One has been aged on toasted pecans, just in time for Autumn! Wondering about the name? Believe it or not, the pecan is not a nut, but a drupe. What’s a bloody drupe you ask? It’s a fruit with an outer fleshy part that surrounds a shell with a seed inside (think peach, cherrie etc). Fact.

We put on a free birthday bash to mark a year of good beers, and good times. 60 BLCo members and their guests piled into Sydney Craft Beer Week’s Ale Yard (formerly known as World Square) to catch up with us, and the teams from 4 Pines, Batch, Rocks and Young Henrys. There were brews, news and even a few moves, as our beloved brewers helped us toast to a massive first year.

On the night, we picked names out of a Batch Brewing Co cap to select our next collaboration brewer. The lucky brewer-to-be is BLCo member Jakkii ‘@slybeer‘ Musgrave. Jakki will be collaborating on her brew with Batch in the coming weeks.

Oh, and did we mention we just signed up Wayward Brewing Co? Stay tuned!

Thanks to all of our members for your ongoing support.
Cheers to the year ahead.

The Beers

Holgate Brewhouse Norton Lager
Helles Lager, 4.3%

Leading the charge in the emergence of the Australian craft lager. Like many of his beers the Norton Lager was inspired by a trip Paul made to Germany admiring the longstanding craft of producing the helles lager. Pale golden in colour, the beer is light on bitterness. The malts also show a delicate touch with honey and light caramel. The spin on the style comes with the use of Aussie Vic’s Secret and Ella hops.

Holgate Brewhouse ESB
ESB, 5%

In honour of Paul Holgate’s English heritage this ESB follows the classic English style. One of the first beers Holgate produced back in 1999. This malt driven beer uses crystal and roast malts to add massive amounts of toffee and caramel. East Kent Golding and Fuggles hops are combined with Australian Galaxy for a slight new world twist. Best served through a hand-pump to accentuate the rich malt flavours.

Holgate Brewhouse Road Trip
American IPA, 5.8%

After a family trip though the West Coast of America. Paul Holgate was inspired to create this beer. His version of an American IPA uses all US hops with Chinook, Centennial and Citra. The hop combination give this beer a big piney, citrus and grapefruit aroma. The big hop presence is balanced by a big biscuity malt backbone and a string backend bitterness.

Holgate Brewhouse Temptress
Chocolate Porter, 6%

What starts as a traditional English robust porter is quickly turned on its head with a big addition of Dutch cocoa and whole vanilla beans. The end result is thick and viscous, the palate shows an abundance of chocolate, caramel and caramel. This beer is smooth and sweet without being overly so, the vanilla is evident on the end of the palate. The ultimate beer to match with your dessert or it can be the dessert itself.

Beers on tap

Pale Ale
American Pale Ale, 5.7%
Originally a limited release brew, this Pale is the newest member of the Mountain Goat core range. True to it’s American style the beer uses a bunch of new world hops including, Chinook, Mosaic, Cascade, Citra and Centennial. The hops combine to give the beer a strong aroma of pine, citrus and stone fruits.  The Beer finishes with clean and dry palate.

Hightail Original + Hightail Nitro
Amber Ale, 4.5%
The O.G Goat beer that was released way back in 1997 setting the stage for the second wave of craft breweries in Australia. A big beer for it’s time Hightail is a malt driven English Amber Ale. The is a balanced floral hop aroma that sits just above that malt backbone. In recent years the use of Nitrogen in some kegged Hightail has transformed the beer adding a rich thick mouthfeel denser carbonation and bringing out a different aroma. On the night, we will serve both Original and Nitro Hightail.

Steam Ale
Organic Ale, 4.5%
Steam is a crisp, certified organic ale incorporating a slap of wheat malt, Cascade and Citra hops to give it a fresh, zippy finish. Great as the weather warms up.

Before The Dawn
Black IPA, 7.4%
Originally released in 2012 Before the Dawn was released to mark the end of winter. This “Rare Breed” black IPA is back at just the right time. This is a big beer that takes the black IPA style to the extreme. The beer pours jet black in colour with only the tinest amount of light sneaking through the glass. The aroma gives big notes of hoppy pine and slightly smokey dark malts. The palate backs up the big nose with added spice and fruit the the big malt right on the finish.
