Pale Ale
Australian Pale Ale 4.8%
Using hops from Australia and America this beer gives a load of fruit aromas. Passion fruit, mangos and citrus all feature upfront. The palate is hop forward this a good malt presence giving balance to the beer. The hoppy fruit characters give way to a clean dry malted finish with a strong but not overpowering bitterness.

Dark Red IPA
India Pale Ale 6%
Pours a very dark red almost black in colour. The use of rich caramel and chocolate malts is what gives this beer it’s signature deep red appearance in contrast to its creamy white head. It’s copious amounts of dark malts is balanced with a big hopping regime. The hops are evident in both the aroma and palate which gives this beer a big West Coast USA style. Big on malts and big on hops a great signature beer.

ESB

An ode to the ESB’s of the U.K where the style was born. Using English malts which are the driving force of the beer. The palate has big notes of toffee, caramel with a biscuity malt finish. The English hops used add a floral note that comes through on the end of the palate. Best drunk at room temperature to allow the full malt flavours to shine.

Celtic Fusion
Coffee Stout 4.7%
An Oatmeal Stout that has been ‘cold drip’ infused with Onyx Coffee Co beans. As to be expected it pours a deep black with a thick tan head just like the creme on your morning espresso. The nose give big hits of coffee backed up with a slight sweetness. The oats come through on the palate and add to the thick mouthfeel which works well with the coffee bitterness that finishes the palate.

Thu 13 Aug    6pm–10pm    The Local Taphouse, 122 Flinders St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010
 35 free double-passes for BLCo members  |  $40 non-members

On a chilly winter night, over 70 Bottled Lightning Co and Beard Season* supporters piled in to The Local Taphouse for a heartwarming night of fundraising fun.

BLCo and Beard Season founder Jimmy Niggles hosted, while our mates at Rocks Brewing Co put up the beers, and The Local Taphouse lined bellies with arancini, meatballs and fried chicken.

Between selfies with Jimmy and beers with the Rocks crew, guests fought over raffle prizes, including: Rocks Brewing Co and Young Henrys Brewery Tours; Local Taphouse dinner vouchers; Beard Season tees; and  prized a ticket to Jimmy’s upcoming Bushmans Ball.

We raised over $800 on the night, which all went to help Beard Season’s fight against melanoma. Thanks to Beard Season, and all BLCo members who turned out to show support for a great cause.

*In case you missed it, Beard Season are a non-profit charity on a quest to help raise awareness and promote early detection of one of the deadliest cancers in the world – melanoma – through growing epic beards. The idea is quite simple: grow your facial fuzz, then steer each beard-inspired conversation, quip or compliment into a chat about a potentially lifesaving skincheck.

Beers

Watermelon Warhead
Sour – Berliner Weisse 2.9% 8 IBU

A light sour German wheat beer infused with half a tonne of Swan Valley watermelons, added to the end of primary fermentation leaving a fresh, spritzy and refreshing beer.

Hop Hog
American IPA 5.8% 48 IBU
Hop Hog is an American style India Pale Ale, with a heavy dose of American hops added during both during the boil and late in the fermenting stage to give a strong pine needle and citrus aroma, followed by an aggressive bitterness and a dry finish.

Smoked Porter
Porter 4.7% 22 IBU
Don’t let the name scare you off, Feral’s Smoked Porter has a very gentle bitterness and combines the classic chocolate malt and coffee characteristics true to the Porter style. A subtle smoked hickory flavour comes from the use of German malts smoked over Birchwood chips.

Karma Citra
India Black Ale 5.8% 48 IBU
A relatively new beer style sees a high proportion of dark malt combined with resinous new world hops and results in a beer with chocolate overtones in the flavour and then showcases the tropical fruit character of the hop variety citra.

Thu 4 Jun    6pm–7.30pm, gig from 8pm    Goodgod Small Club, 53-55 Liverpool St, Sydney 2000
 $30 members, $45 non-members

To celebrate the tapping of our latest collaboration brew (BLCo member Matt Cobb x Young Henrys), we gathered at Goodgod Small Club on Thu 4 Jun to: tap Matt’s brew; take care of the first keg; name the beer; eat some Baogers (see below); then celebrate with YH tinnies at a Twin Beasts gig… it’s was a good one.

Hosted by BLCo and Young Henrys, our members were guided through the brewing process before being asked to help name the beer. We named the brew – drumroll please – Pink Lightning, (nice work Rob Blackburn!) due to the handsome shade of magenta through the beer and even the head, courtesy of the hibiscus infusion.

Our collabo brew will now be on sale around Sydney for a limited period (during which time, our man Cobb will be a living legend).

Alongside the new brew, guests were be treated to Baogers* from Belly Bao, and tinnies from Young Henrys. *In the spirit of collaboration, this is a bao/burger hybrid.

Once the naming ceremony concluded, the real fun began as the band take over. Melbourne grit-pop five-piece Twin Beasts (see vid below) entertained us with a set packed with big hooks and solid rhythms.

We grabbed the tiger by the tail by matching Bangladeshi street food with locally-brewed beers

Tue 28 Apr    6.30pm–9pm    Bang Street Food, 3/410 Crown Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010
 $65 members, $75 non-members

Bangladesh-born head chef Tapos Singha guided guests through a four-course menu, designed to pay tribute to the energetic blend of art, intellect, passion, poverty, love and hate that lines the streets of Bengal.

To complement each course, the Bang team served a locally-brewed beer, each hand picked by BLCo brewers, to match the specific dish. Our beer whiz Liam Pereira was on hand to narrate the night, and help guests make sense of each pairing.

A night of blueberry brews and toe-tapping blues in Marrickville

Wed 1 Apr    6.30pm–9pm    Batch Brewing Co, 44 Sydenham Rd, Marrickville 2204
 $30 members, $45 non-members

Together with the cats from Batch and Nighthawk Diner, we put on a night of blues good enough to make Dan Aykroyd want to dust off his Ray Bans. The Beans sang the brewery blues while Chris and Andrew from Batch introduced their newest beer – a blueberry ale – without ignoring the existing range, of course…

Tickets included three Batch beers, bar snacks throughout the night from Nighthawk, and a good serving of old time blues, courtesy of the Beans. Once the new beer had been tapped, guests hung around to sample the full range of Batch beers at just $5 a jar.
