Keg & Brew

Beer, bourbon and Americana are on tap at this newly refurbished Surry Hills landmark

The old KB Hotel had a lot going for it, not least of which was that it was centrally located, cheap and open at all hours. But for anyone who feared a high-end, whimsical makeover for this old battler, you can breathe easy. The Keg and Brew is still a bloody good boozer. It may have been gussied up a little – there are now cowhide panels along the heavy, three-sided timber bar, framed photos of Dolly Parton and a huge taxidermy moose head – but at knock-off the old KB is still packed with a mix of AIM students, office workers and the odd high-vis contingent, all making hay while the happy hour lasts.

K&B have a full craft contingent on tap so you can ease into things with an American pale ale from the local lads at Pixel, or come out swinging with an India brown ale from the New England Brewing Co or a pumpkin ale from Murrays.

You can slay a serious hunger with a red wine butter eye fillet, ribs, fried chicken or deep fried bacon bites and take a few years off your life with a deep fried Twinkie, but vegans and vegos aren’t left out in the cold with a whole menu section dedicated to meat-free eating.

No, the Keg and Brew is not the same as the old KB, but thanks to their impressive craft beer qualifications, a kitchen that knows it’s way around a side of beef and a more the merrier attitude, it’s a whole lot better in our opinion.
